The W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council has successfully established itself as a formal and influential body within Heiltsuk governance. Key achievements include having their role ratified in the Heiltsuk Constitution, forming a leadership structure, and building strong partnerships. Their work focuses on community impact in justice and social matters, women’s wellness, strategic planning, and mentoring the next generation of leaders to ensure Haíɫzaqv women have a permanent voice in decision-making. Here is a look at some of the accomplishments during 2025.

  1. Community Impact
  • Support in development and implementation of the Women’s Safe Home as advisers and knowledge keepers.
  • Support in social and justice matters in collaboration with Heiltsuk Justice department
  • Successful negotiation for inclusion of W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council in the Heiltsuk Constitution
  • Particiaiton in cultural, governance, justice and other community events.
  • Participation in Joint leadership meetings as advisors and knowledge keepers.
  • Participation in healing events, community meetings and ceremonial gatherings.
  1. Achievement of Goals
  • Completed, ratified and signed Terms of Reference with Joint Leadership
  • Constitution formalized and ratified incorporation of W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council
  • Elected Chair and Vice Chairperson positions
  • Formed Executive Committee
  • Identified membership delegation to Joint Leadership, Constitution Implementation Committee.
  • Hosted three women’s wellness workshops
  • Ongoing development of 3-year strategic plan to include collaborative relations with Interagency Services providers including Kaxla CFS, Kunsoot Wellness Centre, RCMP.

 

  1. Partnerships & Collaboration
  • Joint Leadership MOU signed
  • Women’s Declaration incorporated into Terms of Reference for W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council
  • Co-sponsored 5-Year Big House Celebration with Y̓iím̓as du Haíɫzaqv Tribal Council

with the last day hosted by Women’s Council.

  1. Capacity Building
  • Louisa Jones hired as W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council Coordinator with goal to mentor a replacement.
  • Executive Assistant to be hired.
  • Board training to strengthen leadership and governance skills
  • Develop partnerships with other First Nations Women’s group to support and share expertise and knowledge.
  • Work with Joint Leadership, RCMP and Justice department to develop strategy to address issue of drug problems within community.
  • Support and advise on human rights issues as they impact Heiltsuk Citizens
  • Support and advise in review and development of updated By-laws
  • Recruit younger women to be mentored as part of Women’s Council.
  • Have Women’s Council delegate to local boards and committees as advisors and knowledge keepers to support organizational work including youth groups.
  1. Recognition & Influence
  • Yim̓ás Waúyala ensured Haíɫzaqv women were signatories at the Heiltsuk Declaration of Rights & Title ceremony, amplifying their influence in policy and local decision-making.
  • W̓iúm̓aqs du M̓ím̓ṇúyaqs Council now have a legal and political role as advisors within the ratified Heiltsuk Constitution.
